Co-occurring SMI and SUD Learning Series | Session 1: Pharmacological Management of Alcohol Use Disorder in Individuals with Bipolar and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders
Date & Time

Selected Sessions:

Apr 30, 2025 03:00 PM

Description
Of the more than 14 million adults with SMI in 2023, nearly half (6.8 million) also had a substance use disorder (SAMHSA, 2024). People with co-occurring SUD and SMI often benefit from tailored treatment and care that addresses both conditions at once. While it can at first be intimidating for clinicians, organizations, and family members to understand best practices for supporting these patients, it doesn’t have to be. The Serious Mental Illness Training and Technical Assistance Center (SMI TTAC) is excited to share a four-part learning series on co-occurring SUDs and SMI. Each session in this series will focus on a different aspect of co-occurring SMI and SUD, whether it’s a specific SUD or a particularly effective treatment and care approach. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) can have serious clinical consequences and present unique challenges for pharmacological management in people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. In this session, we’ll discuss effective, evidence-based ways for clinicians to manage these co-occurring conditions and deliver quality care to their patients. Javier Ballester-Gonzalez, MD, leads this learning opportunity, which will include live Q&A. Learning objectives: - Understand pharmacological treatments for AUD. - Examine co-use of antipsychotics/mood stabilizers and AUD medications. - Discuss specific considerations for clozapine and disulfiram. - Evaluate potential benefits of GLP-1 agonists for AUD and metabolic syndrome, including among those with SMI. This clinically-focused session is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, residents and medical students. However, all are welcome and encouraged to attend! Please note that CEUs are not offered for this event.
